Tour Highlights

The Settlement Center
Located in two of Borgarnes’s oldest buildings and is devoted to recreating Iceland’s earliest days and introduces visitors to one of the best-known heroes of the Icelandic Sagas, Egil Skalla-Grimsson. It also houses a cozy restaurant, café, and a souvenir shop. The Center consists of three buildings, the warehouse, the merchant house, and the reception hall. Keep in mind that this is a museum and that you will need to pay entrance to the exhibitions.

Reykholt
Reykholt was at one time one of the intellectual centers of Iceland and had for many years one of the most important schools in the country. The poet and politician Snorri Sturluson lived in Reykholt during the Middle Ages. Sturluson's records of the Old Norse language and mythology of medieval Iceland are invaluable to modern scholars. Remains of his farm and a bathroom with a hot tub and a tunnel between the bath and the house can still be visited. The Snorrastofa Cultural Research Centre was established in Reykholt on September 6, 1988.

Hraunfossar
Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 meters out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into Hvítá (Borgarfjörður), from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. The name comes from the Icelandic word for lava (hraun) and the word for waterfalls (fossar).

Literally a stone's throw upstream from Hraunfossar, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, the waterfall of the children, comes from a story which is said to have taken place here in former times. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterward, the grief-struck mother had the bridge destroyed.

Húsafell
In Húsafell's surrounding nature you can expect to find dense woodlands, waterfalls, glaciers, rugged lava, crystal springs, wildflowers plus remarkable archaeological remains. We might be stopping here for lunch or to visit the swimming pool. If you have decided to book the tour with "Into The Glacier", then we will meet the local guides at this location.

Deildartunguhver
Deildartunguhver Is Europe's most powerful hot spring. It provides 180 l/sec of 100°C hot water. Most of the water used for central heating in the towns of Borgarnes and Akranes is taken from Deildartunguhver. The hot water pipeline to Akranes is 64 km long, the longest in Iceland and the water is about 78 - 80 degrees when it reaches Akranes. If you take a shower anywhere within a 65 km radius of the spring, you have already bathed in the hot water from this powerful spring.

Víðgemlir Cave (Optional)
Víðgelmir is a lava tube situated in the Hallmundarhraun lava field (formed around 900 AD) in west Iceland. The roof of the lava tube has collapsed, creating two large openings near its north end which are the only known entrances. Víðgelmir is 1585 m long and the largest part of the cave passage is 15.8 m high and 16.5 m wide, making it by far the largest of its kind in Iceland. The cave has a wide entrance but narrows down in some places. An iron gate was installed at the first constriction in 1991 to preserve those of the delicate lava formations or speleothems which hadn't already been destroyed. Evidence of human habitation, probably dating to the Viking Age, has been discovered in the cave and is preserved in the National Museum of Iceland. Long stretches of the cave floor are very rough and shouldn't be navigated without a guide. This a guided tour by the locals, so please check the website Thecave.is for availability and price.

Into The Glacier (Optional)
Into the Glacier is a tour operator, offering access to the largest man-made ice tunnel in the world. The ice tunnel and the caves are located high on Iceland‘s second-largest glacier, Langjökull, where you will have an amazing opportunity to explore the glacier and see it from the inside. To journey inside one of Iceland’s frozen giants is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This a guided tour by the locals, so please check the website Intotheglacier.is or availability and price.

Krauma (Optional)
Experience nature from its core by bathing in the geothermal baths at Krauma. The hot water originates in Europe’s most powerful hot spring Deildartunguhver, at a temperature of 100°C (212°F). To achieve the perfect bathing temperature we mix the hot water with cold water from Rauðsgil, which originates in the glacier "OK". OK was the smallest glacier in Iceland and is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier in August 2019.

Krauma offers five relaxing natural geothermal baths, a cold tub to get your blood circulation going, two calming saunas, and a relaxation room where you can rest by the fireplace while listening to soothing music.

Please check the website Krauma.is or availability and price.

We have arrived in Iceland 🇮🇸 It's been a good first day on the road, although we've just had to turn the car around as the road has collapsed 🙈 (check our stories). All part of the adventure though eh?

Our first stop on our heyiceland northern road trip today was to the hot springs at #deildartunguhver, and of course we had to pop in for a dip in the nearby thermal krauma_baths. Toasty warm ☺️
